Vortex Helios Review: Musically Relax your IEMs

Astral Acoustics Mars paired with Canpur CP54E

Compared to Astral Acoustics Mars (Review link)

Mars is a pure copper, coaxial-design cable priced at $650, sitting above Helios in price. As covered in our Mars review, Mars is a cable that prioritizes resolution, dynamics, liveliness, and extension – a more energetic and W-shaped upgrade that makes the sound more agile and impactful. Helios approaches cable improvement from a different angle. Where Mars focuses on energetic dynamics and liveliness, Helios focuses on tonal density and smoothness.

Bass-wise, both extend well into the sub-lows, though Mars makes the bass more punchy and agile, while Helios makes it fuller and warmer in body. Mars’s bass has more snap and immediacy; Helios’s bass is more cushioned and round. The mid-range comparison is interesting – Mars makes vocals more dynamic and lively while Helios makes them thicker and smoother in tone. If you’re looking for a vocal upgrade that adds energy and resolution, Mars does that better. If you’re looking for warmth, fullness, and a creamier timbre, Helios is the better fit.

Trebles also differ in approach. Mars polishes the treble splashes and improves clarity and transparency, while Helios keeps the upper frequencies smooth and composed without adding extra brightness. Mars has better overall treble extension and transparency; Helios has better overall tonal warmth and timbre. At $650, Mars has a technical and performance edge, but Helios at ~$470 targets a different sonic character that Mars doesn’t offer.

Compared to Vortex Cables Seraphina (Review link)

Seraphina, as reviewed previously, is a cable from Vortex’s C.F.S. series that leans towards V-shaped boosting – deeper sub-bass, fuller vocals, and a breezy airiness in the upper headroom. It uses a silver-plated 6N OCC copper construction, which gives it a noticeably different tonal character from Helios’s gold-plated 7N OCC copper.

The first thing you notice comparing the two is the difference in tonal weight. Seraphina is more neutral-bright leaning, keeping the mids at neutral thickness while adding treble airiness and sub-bass extension. Helios is warmer, denser, and fuller in the mids, adding body and thickness where Seraphina adds lift and air. Bass quantity boosting is something both cables do, though the texture and character of that boost differ – Seraphina’s sub-bass gets more emphasis in quantity, while Helios’s bass gets more emphasis in tonal weight and depth.

Vocals on Seraphina are thinner and airier in comparison; vocals on Helios are fuller and creamier. For IEMs that already lean warm or thick in the mids, Seraphina would be the safer choice. For IEMs that lean analytical, dry, or reference-neutral, Helios fills in the warmth and body better than Seraphina would. In terms of technical performance, Helios is the more refined cable overall – the 7N OCC purity and Litz Type 7 Helix structure represent a genuine step up in build and conductor quality over the C.F.S. series.

Copper Warmth with Golden Lushness…

Vortex Cables Helios is a purposeful, well-characterized cable that knows what kind of improvement it’s chasing – and delivers it consistently. Many premium and TOTL IEMs are getting more and more aggressive with their technicality and upper-end transparency, and even to my ears, some of them get hot depending on tracks and tastes. Gold-plated copper as a single-material base gives it a warm, dense, and organic tonal identity that pairs particularly well with analytical or neutral-leaning IEMs that could benefit from added richness, or with already warm IEMs that respond well to deeper tonal density.

It’s not the cable to reach for if you’re after a brighter, more energetic presentation or increased treble airiness – the Iris or Seraphina would serve better there. But for warmth, timbre richness, vocal fullness, and smooth, composed trebles, Helios fills a specific and useful niche in Vortex’s expanding lineup. At around $470 with the option to add Versa connectors for multi-IEM flexibility, Helios is a solid and well-priced entry into the premium custom cable hobby that’ll serve your earphones right.
