Vortex Helios Review: Musically Relax your IEMs

Pared with FatFreq Quantum (Product link)

The Quantum is one of FatFreq’s more reference-oriented offerings, leaning neutral with a dry, analytical texture. FatFreq Quantum uses a single planar driver, and the “planar shoutiness” is something that’s commonly known as the inborn nature of these driver types. While Quantum is a very nice example that nicely countered the mid-range spike or shoutiness, it’s still possible for Quantum to be further refined if you want more smoothness and musicality – and Helios does an awesome job.

Pairing it with Helios introduces a noticeable tonal shift in a very positive direction. The added density from Helios gives the Quantum’s bass a fuller body, giving it more physical presence without pushing the quantity beyond what the tuning intends. The mid-range is where the combination works particularly well – the Quantum’s vocals gain warmth and body, making the midrange feel more musical and natural while keeping the IEM’s strong resolution intact. The timbre gets noticeably more organic, which softens the Quantum’s drier, more clinical edge without removing the analytical traits that make it a good monitoring IEM. Trebles remain composed and detailed, with Helios keeping things smooth and fatigue-free.

Paired with Campfire Audio Andromeda 10 (Review link)

As mentioned in our Andromeda 10 review, the Andromeda 10 has a neutral-warm, “just north of neutral” sound with a characteristic creamy, shimmery Andromeda timbre that Campfire carefully preserved through the 10-driver evolution. Pairing it with Helios further deepens the tonal richness that defines the Andromeda DNA. The background gets perceptibly darker and quieter, and the creamy mid-range becomes even smoother and fuller. The already-impressive tonal stability of the Andro 10 across the spectrum is reinforced further by Helios, making the transition from sub-bass to the lower mids even more seamless.

One thing to note is that Helios doesn’t push the bass quantity up significantly, which is appropriate for the Andromeda 10 – the Andro 10’s bass is precise and purposefully controlled, and Helios respects that character while giving it additional depth and tonal color. The vocal wholeness that defined the Andromeda series gets even fuller and more complete here. Trebles maintain the Andro 10’s composed and dark-toned character, keeping things smooth and fatigue-free while gaining a bit more body and substance in tone.

Pairing with Forté Ears Macbeth (Review link)

This is where Helios becomes particularly interesting. As covered in our Macbeth review, Macbeth’s strongest asset is its silky, extremely high-resolution vocal texture – smooth not because it’s buffed flat, but because the texture grains are so fine and evenly distributed that the surface feels luxuriously smooth while fully preserving micro-detail. However, a decent number of listeners and users of Macbeth have also reported that the upper frequencies get a bit too hot in timbre and texture, which is the main reason the next model, Mefisto, is being born. Yet again, pairing Macbeth with Helios is an even better option in my experience, as Helios builds directly on Macbeth’s analytical finesse while soothing the heat with the warm, dense gold-plated copper character.

The combination makes Macbeth’s already deep and richly layered bass even more substantial in weight and decay. That quality of the low-end feeling like a large-format planar driver – that evenly-meaty, flowing grooviness – gets another layer of depth and physical weight added to it through Helios. The mid-range gains extra fullness in the lower mids, making the already-large vocal scale feel even more expansive. The silky texture that defines Macbeth’s vocals is preserved entirely – Helios doesn’t introduce any graininess or roughness, and the warmth it adds sits naturally on top of Macbeth’s existing tonal character without altering it. This is one of the better pairings I’ve tried for Macbeth.
